Abstrakt:

The aim of the present study is to show the possibilities of studying stillbirths on the basis of an analysis of the parish register records from the 19 th century. So far, this topic has been outside the attention of Czech researchers. The findings are presented using the example of the towns of Litomyšl and Svitavy. in the 19 th century, Litomyšl was a traditional rural town without industrial development. On the contrary, Svitavy became an important industrial centre because from the middle of the 19 th century the main railway line from Prague to Brno ran through the town. As it has been found, the character of the town did not affect the observed stillbirth rates. The main problem was the brief and incomplete records of stillbirths. Besides them, abortions and, in the case of Svitavy, stillborn children who were baptised out of necessity were also recorded in the registers. in addition to the problematic registration, the study also pays attention to the causes of death in stillbi
